DNIE offers a variety of programs that include sponsored classroom delivery of electronic replica (digital) editions - e-Editions of The Detroit News OR customer paid print delivery on Thursdays or Fridays. Our educational rate for e-Editions is 15 cents per copy Mondays through Saturdays, but sponsorship is available for e-Editions - while funds last. Customer paid print copies are available at 25 cents per copy on Thursdays and Fridays. Due to a funding shortfall, we no longer offer sponsorship of print copies of The Detroit News. An e-Ed Breakfast Serials 100% sponsored News 10-11 Program
Fully sponsored electronic delivery of The Detroit News Monday through Saturday from 9/6/10 through 6/10/11 will include Breakfast Serials on Mondays, serialized stories for grades 4 and up. Breakfast Serials will appear in the Monday e-Edition of The Detroit News as a Breakfast Serials E-EDITION ONLY BONUS PAGE every Monday from September 20, 2010 through May 30, 2011, excluding 12/20/10, 12/27/10 and 4/3/11. A teacher guide for each serial will be available for download but activities will also be printed as part of the Monday e-Edition only BONUS page. Breakfast Serials will not be part of print editions of The News. The News will offer two Breakfast Serials during the 2010-11 school year: DESOLATION CANYON - Sixteen (16) chapters on Mondays from September 20, 2010 - January 17, 2011 (excluding December 20 and 27, 2010) written by Jonathan London and illustrated by Maile Pickett. Twelve-year-old Aaron and his father, along with Lisa and her father (Roger), and Willie and his fourteen-year-old son Cassidy, set off on a white-water rafting adventure down the Green River, Utah. They intend to pass through Desolation Canyon, famous for its difficult rapids. While the dads have considerable river experience, Aaron has much to learn. As for young Cassidy, though he has had some experience with rafting there is much wildness in him. Worse, his practical jokes and bad attitude are enough to make a hard trip that much more difficult. This difficulty comes to a boil in tensions between Aaron’s dad and Cassidy. Matters turn critical when a raft is found floating empty with both he and Cassidy missing. Has Cassidy turned to violence on the violent river? And even if there has been no violence, will the expedition ever get to safety? After all, Desolation Canyon is a place that long ago earned its name. MAGIC ELIZABETH - Eighteen (18) chapters on Mondays from January 24 - May 30, 2011 (excluding April 3) written by Norma Kassirer and illustrated by Joe Krush. When Sally's parents are suddenly called away, she is sent to stay with Aunt Sarah who is as scary as her mysterious old house. Sally's spirits pick up when she discovers an old portrait of a young girl who looks curiously like her. But this girl is holding the most exquisite doll she has ever seen. As Sally begins to explore the old house, she finds a diary which reveals that the doll Elizabeth went missing years ago. Sally's search for it transports her to another time. Magic Elizabeth is a charming blend of the true and fanciful. IMPORTANT NOTES! An e-Ed Paws for Reading 100% sponsored Tigers fall program
The Paws for Reading Presented by the Detroit Tigers(grades 3-8) program is designed to get kids reading. It offers ways to find books they will like and tips on how to make the most of any reading they do. It includes stories about Tigers players, including program spokesperson Max Scherzer, and how reading has helped them succeed, learn and enjoy life. It includes suggestions on books they might like, and a Reading Scoreboard on which they can record books they read. That's why the Detroit Tigers - along with sponsors DMC, The Skillman Foundation and The Detroit Tigers Foundation - teamed up with Detroit Free Press Newspapers in Education to bring the Paws for Reading program to Michigan schools. This fully sponsored program is available with delivery of Monday through Friday e-Editions of the Free Press from October 429.
